Rubi Wahhab Nicholas
Nick at Nite’s Funniest Mom in America
As a first generation Muslim woman of Pakistani descent, Rubi Nicholas is the antithesis of what one would expect with such a strong ethnic background. Born to a culture steeped in the tradition of the quiet, compliant female, Rubi breaks the mold. Far from choosing the typical life as a doctor’s wife, she has walked a variety of career paths, chosen a non-traditional family route and now, has succeeded in breaking even more rules. Recently selected the “Funniest Mom in America,” Rubi’s humor incorporates her ethnic heritage, her family life as a corporate woman whose husband is a stay at home dad, and the antics of her two little girls. Her ability to weave together her story and allow the audience to experience her life while thinking about the ways in which we can all find common ground is a remarkable experience. From parents to parenting, culture clashes to kids, Rubi understands what makes us laugh.
Adrian Mesa
Born in the crazy atmosphere of South Florida, this 1st generation Cuban-American comedian has shaped his own sunny-sided stand-up. He is equally adept at traditional stand-up, improvisation, and his very own brand of original guitar comedy. After doing comedy for half his life, this twenty-something has won various contests: Latino Laugh Festival in 2000 Winner of the Las Vegas Comedy Festival in 2003. He has featured on CBS’ “Urban Latino” and Telemundo’s MUN2, show “The Roof”. Recently he has taken on New York City- a Mecca for all artists. Aside from garnering props from pros at Carolines, or Stand-up New York, Adrian also has proven to be quite electric in the “alternative” rooms sprinkled throughout the Village. Next he explored the great west, he immersed himself into the Denver comedy scene-where original fresh comedy flows as freely as the hand-crafted microbrews.

The Town That Was
A documentary about Centralia
July 31, 2009 – 7:00 p.m.
August 1, 2009 – 7:00 p.m.
August 2, 2009 – 2:00 p.m.
Tickets: $5.00 per person
The Town that Was is an independent film directed by Chris Perkel and Georgie Roland depicting the life of Centralia residents remaining in the community today.
In 1962, a trash fire ignited a seam of anthracite coal beneath Centralia, Pennsylvania, a once thriving mining town of over 1600 people. By the mid 1980’s, giant plumes of smoke and deadly carbon monoxide gases billowed from fissures in the ground, the local highway cracked and collapsed, trees were bleached white and petrified, as the fire continued to rage unchecked. It wasn’t until a young boy nearly died after falling into a smoldering mine subsidence that the government was pressed into action. After estimating the cost of extinguishing the fire at over a half a billion dollars, the government opted to raze the town and relocate its residents.
Today, 11 die-hards remain.
Almost One
Saturday, August 15 7:00 p.m. Tickets $5.00
Almost One was formed in a garage by a stream surrounded by woods in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, by five people who were friends long before they were band mates.
Ryan Wehr (guitars), Bill Yazujian (guitars, vocals, and piano), Lon Gipe (percussion), Evan Sterner (bass guitar), and Justin Fidler (guitars, vocals, and harmonica) began molding their musical endeavor in the spring of 2004 with minimal experience but high expectations. With musical influences ranging from folk and country to jazz and blues to rock and punk, the finished result of the songwriting process surprised no one more than the band members themselves. Above all, the band plays and writes music that they themselves would want to hear. Their grassroots style keeps them honest, and keeps them sane.
With support from family, friends, fans, and other local musicians, Ryan, Bill, Lon, Evan, and Justin have been working to bring the atmosphere of Almost One to as many people as possible.
