The Sovereign Majestic Theater, located at 209 North Centre Street, is one of two reverse-screen theaters remaining in the state of Pennsylvania and the sole theater remaining in downtown Pottsville.
Built in 1910, the Majestic Theater is an eclectic style, two-and-a-half story building with a Beaux Arts-classical facade.
Opening on Saturday, July 9, 1910, the Sovereign Majestic Theater was the destination for fans of westerns and serials for twenty years, closing its doors in 1930. The building remained empty for nine years before being reopened as a Farmers Market in 1939 by the Baker Family of Bloomsburg. Despite ownership changes over the next three decades, the Farmers Market served as the primary use of the building until its close in August 1995.In 1995, a regional plan identified a performing arts center as essential for the City of Pottsville’s further evolution into a thriving and vibrant community. The Sovereign Majestic Theater Association (SMTA) was created in 1998 to champion the revitalization of the 1910 Majestic Theater into a state-of-the-art, all-purpose facility for the performing arts. Serving the Schuylkill County Community, the Sovereign Majestic Theater would provide space for theater, music, and motion picture presentations.
The Pottsville Area Development Corporation (PADCO), the primary community and economic development agency for the City of Pottsville, and Sovereign Majestic Theater Association (SMTA) purchased the building in January 2001 for $80,000 with plans to transform the building into a regional performing arts center.
Today the Sovereign Majestic Theater is a 224-seat venue for the presentation of professional cultural programs for children and adults. The Sovereign Majestic Theater is located in the heart of the City of Pottsville, the Schuylkill County seat of government, and is a contributing structure within the Pottsville Downtown Historic District, as listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places.
The refurbished Sovereign Majestic Theater is suitable for many kinds of performances including plays, children’s theater, concerts, and movies. The programming developed by SMTA will provide the local community affordable musical and artistic entertainment. The Sovereign Majestic Theater Association, a nonprofit, volunteer organization, is committed to preserving and operating a quality performing arts facility in both a fiscally and socially responsible manner to further develop the civic, cultural, and artistic needs of the Schuylkill County regional community
